Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finalist Carmel Wright

What are the most important qualities you look for when picking a prospect to make a rodeo barrel horse?
I like correct conformation, well balanced. An average to short back, low set hocks. A smooth reaching stride, good wide forehead and kind eye.

What are the 3 most important things you do during the year to keep your horse sound and working all year long?

I believe fitness to be one of the most important ingredients to keeping a healthy competition horse, also regular shoeing. Teeth and chiropractor work help maintain a peak performer through the year.

What is the one item in your tack room or barn that you would never want to be without?
I can’t do without my Photonic Torch. I use this every time before I compete.

Give us the rundown on your horse
I ride a Cowboy Classic saddle
Professional’s Choice saddle pad
Dave Elliot (magic) bit
Iconoclast boots
Triple Crown complete, TC 14% and TC 30% also TC Fish Oil Powder.
Free Choice pasture and grass, alfalfa mix hay.

What is your horse’s greatest strength? Biggest weakness? Sweet Heart has wicked fast reaction time, it is an asset and a hindrance. She can run in so hard then turn so fast, but if I make a mistake she has already committed to it before I can correct myself.

What is the most unique habit or behavior your horse has?
Sweet Heart is a prima donna, when you are riding her she doesn’t like mud, doesn’t like walking through sage brush etc. She can be quite lazy, but she will run on any ground I ask her to and usually does it very well.

What horse(s) are you going to be riding at the Circuit Finals?
I will be riding Sweet Heart Special at the circuit finals and I will have a young horse as a back up: Thundernlightning

If you could make a run on any other horse in the Montana Circuit what horse would you choose and why?
I would like to run Shelly Anzick’s horse Scooter. He looks like he would be a blast to ride.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that we may not know (a special talent, hobby, interest, etc.):
I am an artist, do pencil drawings and oil paintings.

What is your occupation (how do you fund your barrel racing/horsey habit)?
My husband manages a ranch and we have a business, training and selling barrel and pole horses and some ranch horses. And what I can win helps keep us on the road.

Who or what event has been the biggest influence in your rodeo career?
I really look up to Mary Burger , she is an inspiration to be doing what she does at her age , and also who doesn’t admire Sherry Cervi. She is such an accomplished horsewoman.
