Which horse(s) are you taking to the finals? Aint She Perfect aka “Lucy”.
What is unique about their personality and what are their strengths? I’m not sure Lucy has a weakness. She’s very sure she’s part of the family. The kids can ride her but she knows her job and will flip the switch to go when you need her. I swear she can understand me. When I tell her it’s important, she knows! She always rises to the occasion. She handled every set up, every ground condition I threw at her this year.
How tall are they and what is their weight (thought it would be fun to compare)? Just a guess but I’d say she’s about 15 hands and probably 1100 lbs. on the smaller side.
What are your favorite memories/highlights and obstacles you faced getting to the 2025 circuit finals? So many! A couple that stand out are taking the kids to Banff while at some rodeos in Canada. Really loved a few of those counting for the circuit this year. It was beautiful.
And over Labor Day. We went to Killdeer and were up in slack that morning and Dillon that night. We didn’t know if we were going to make it. Very photo finish moment but Lucy knew we needed to make it count and won Dillon.
How long have you been a WPRA member and how many circuit finals have you qualified for? I’ve been a member for at least 10 years maybe 11. And qualified for 7 circuit finals.
When did you start competing in the barrels? Been running barrels since I was 8.
Do you raise your own horses? Or do you purchase? Are you looking for specific bloodlines? Both. Raised the first horse I qualified on. (Sparky (BJO)). Bought the next two as weanlings (Shazam from treasure state and Hershey from Grantiers in Winnett) and Lucy was just a blessing. Got her when she was 4. Trusted that gut feeling I needed her. More looking for conformation but when breeding something I try to fill in the gaps in the mare. Also something in some incentives helps with resale and futurities down the rode. Lucy’s made me a believer in ASNY.
What are your conditioning and workout routines for both you and your horse(s)? I try to workout every day but usually ends up being a few times a week between kids' activities and work. I ride as often and as long as I can. Again not as much as I’d like to with life and everything going on. I’ve said my horses now have to be able to make up for the time I have and this winter the weather we’ve had. I believe in really asking them to use themselves correctly and lots of backing up. More specific moves to make the most of the time I have.
When you're headed to a rodeo what do you listen to: inspirational podcasts, music, audio books? I like podcasts. My husband likes music or movies but mostly we listen to the kids lol.
What or who are you thankful for? Thankful for my family. Really blessed to get to do what we do together.
Do you have favorite spots to stop at or favorite snacks while on the road? We love finding interesting places to visit on the road. Try to find new things to see or do with the kids. And doesn’t happen very often but I’m a sucker for sneaking in a good steak dinner when we can.
Who do you travel with (including pets or companion horses) and in what kind of rig? First my husband and two kids. Really thankful for them and being able to do this together. Monti Lou the weenie dog. And always a few colts on the rig. Driving a Ford and Rodeo Rigs Elite trailer that we love.
What are your hobbies or other sports do you compete in? Hobbies now mostly revolve around the kids now but I like to paint if I have some free time somewhere.
The Run Down
Saddle: Robbie Phillips
Pad: Best Ever
Leg Gear: Classic Equine Classic fit
Shoeing: rims on front, plains on the hinds.
Bits: depends on the set up and how I’m feeling. Pretty sure I could run Lucy in a halter. Usually pick a Boutin Jordon Briggs short shank with a Billy Allen mouthpiece inside or Kerry Kelly ticket combo outside.
Feed and Supplements (in addition to what, how much you feed daily): Blue Bonnett feed with Stride Animal Health supplements. I usually only grain them when I ride and try to fit it to what I think each horse needs additional but good hay is a big part of it as well.
Additional Care: accuscope, ice, back on track, wrapping legs.
Sponsors: Crowley Farm and Ranch, and Rodeo Rigs.
