Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finalist Shelley Murphy

What are the most important qualities you look for when picking a prospect to make a rodeo barrel horse?
I think every horse has their own level of talent and a trainer has to be able to bring that talent out in them. You might go through 20 horses to find one good one, not that the rest are bad but they just might not be a big enough caliber of horse.  I have a certain group of bloodlines that I like to ride and after that it is all based on their individual talent..

What are the 3 most important things you do during the year to keep your horse sound and working all year long?

I use Jeannie Hunter (Bozeman) for horse body work and Sid Erickson for chiropractic treatments; the Theraplate to help keep them feeling good and Back on Track Products.

What is the one item in your tack room or barn that you would never want to be without? Blankets....I hoard them.

Give us the rundown on your horse

Bit: Jarret gag that I had Dave Elliot custom build for Dyna (Ms Lucki Kelly).
Headgear: none
Saddle: Three Forks saddlery
Protective boots: Classic Equine
Feed (hay, grain, supplements): Alfalfa grass mixture. Woody's Summer Heat and Silver Lining Herbs.

What is your horse’s greatest strength? She wants to please and she can make mistakes and still clock.

Biggest weakness? She isnt a “made” horse yet so still requires some jockeying, some times more then others it just depends on her mood.

What is the most unique habit or behavior your horse has? Dyna will NOT back out, or off, of anything. She is a huge lover.

What horse(s) are you going to be riding at the Circuit Finals? I plan to run Dyna, but will have Alley and Stitch as backup.

If you could make a run on any other horse in the Montana Circuit what horse would you choose and why?
Cally Goyins’crew because I know how much time and dedication she puts into them and she always has some of the nicest horses going. You can just take your pick.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that we may not know (a special talent, hobby, interest, etc.):
I enjoy upland bird hunting and have trained my own bird dog.

What is your occupation (how do you fund your barrel racing/horsey habit)? I train barrel racing horses, give lessons and I work for the Montana Association of Counties.

Who or what event has been the biggest influence in your rodeo career? My family! My mom and dad for always supporting my dream of horses as a little girl. My father's passing pushed me to hit the road full time and my mom is always there as support whether it means driving all night, cleaning stalls, feeding and watering to entering and filming at a jackpot. My husband and son for them always taking care of business at the house while I am gone and for their constant support and words of encouragement.
