2024 Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finalist Sarah Verhelst

Which horse(s) are you taking to the finals? I will be riding Pearl (Doc O Can Dyna)

What is unique about their personality and what are their strengths? How tall are they and what is their weight (thought it would be fun to compare)? She’s a sorrel mare, very low key. No drama and lazy. 15.0 hands 1150lb.

When did you start competing in breakaway? I started roping when I was 8 years old.

How long have you been a WPRA member and how many finals qualifications? I have been a member of WPRA since 2019, 3rd Circuit finals qualification.

Do you raise your own horses? Or do you purchase? Are you looking for specific bloodlines? We raise and train all of our own horses. Look for speed, intelligence, and athleticism. Most of our horses have cow and run breeding in them. Pearl is by Doc O Montana who was a combination of both, and her mother was a daughter of Paddys Irish Whiskey and an Appendix mare.

What are your conditioning and workout routines for both you and your horse(s)? Try and work out 3-4 days a week in the winter, and just keep good horses exercised. Usually try and practice on young horses and only rope on good horses 1 or 2 times a week.

When you're headed to the rodeo what do you listen to: inspirational podcasts, music, audio books? I listen to whatever my kids or traveling partners feel like.

Do you have favorite spots to stop or snacks while on the road? Maverick gas stations and Blackroin Grill & Rotisserie in Miles City are the best!

Who do you travel with (including pets or companion horses) and in what kind of rig? Usually travel with Joey Williams or Anna Callaway and one or more kids. Usually a Ford truck and LQ trailer.

What are your favorite memories/highlights and obstacles you faced getting to the 2024 circuit finals? I have kids that high school rodeo now, so juggling rigs and horses in the late fall was pretty hectic. Love that we are making that transition, but definitely added a new level of crazy to 2024!

What or who are you thankful for? Thanks to my husband and kids for always supporting me and encouraging me! Makes it great to rodeo as a family!

What are your hobbies or other sports you compete in? My kids love to high school rodeo and wrestling! So I guess those are my hobbies.
